Peeping could be heard inside the three-foot high log. It wasn’t clear how many birds were nesting in the cavity or what species they were or how to extricate them. The hole in the log was large enough for a parent bird to come and go but not for even the small hands of Rehabilitation […]
On the beach, a huge crowd had gathered. Music played loudly. Parents cheered on their children – over here in a volleyball tournament, over there in a soccer match – a festive family day. But it was a day that nearly turned deadly for a young Killdeer – a type of plover that lives in […]
This spring, wildlife rehabilitation centers all along the California coast were admitting a wave of emaciated Brown Pelicans, and Pacific Wildlife Care was no exception. Between mid-March and mid-June, we admitted 50 pelicans, the vast majority of them starving juveniles. This wasn’t a one-time fluke. We’ve now seen a spring surge of underweight pelicans in […]
The mystery was how a nestling Great-Horned Owl ended up not just on the ground under the nest at a SLO winery but instead about 75 to 100 yards away from it, at the door to a restroom. Great horned owl 575 found at the restroom doorBrought to PWC, little GHOW 575 was alert and […]
Great-horned Owl 2196 was found entangled in barbed wire fencing, with no possibility of freeing himself. Imagining the pain, a would-be rescuer with good intentions might rush to free the bird on the spot, or attempt to. This would be the exact wrong move. Fortunately for this bird, Sara Sylwester knew what to do. She […]
The folks who discovered a furry creature under their vehicle in an Arroyo Grande RV park didn’t know at first what it was. When it turned out to be an American Beaver, they were perplexed. The beaver was out of her habitat, nowhere near running water. They knew to call PWC. The beaver patient during […]
Red-tailed Hawk 2999 was covered in so much of a lightly colored viscous oil that her correct weight wouldn’t be known until the next day, after she could be washed. Contrary to the impression left by some TV commercials, aquatic birds are not the only ones who may need to be washed in a rehabilitation […]
The multi-episode saga of RTHA 24-1516 had all the dangers and plot twists of a summer blockbuster. The nestling hawk gained avian celebrity status in SLO County when he was taken to a bald eagle nest by one of the adults, presumably as food for their two eaglets. Against all odds, the hawk survived. In […]
For a while this season, PWC turned into “Grebe Town.” Western and Clark’s Grebes filled the treatment room, carriers, drying pens, seabird room, and outdoor pools. Admitted by the dozens, all were dehydrated, most emaciated and weak, and many storm-tossed or oiled—usually due to natural seep from the ocean floor. Some had crash-landed on parking […]
